Rain Forest FAQs

The Great Bear Rainforest is the largest expanse of coastal temperate rainforest left in the world. Grizzly bears roam freely through ancient stands of spruce and cedar, five species of Pacific salmon spawn in crystal rivers, and bald eagles nest in towering trees.

According to the many Sources, only 20% of the earth's original forest cover remains in large areas of relatively undisturbed ancient forests. One such area is the Great Bear Rainforest, a 7 million hectare (17.5 million acre) region of coastal temperate rainforests on the northwest coast of British Columbia, Canada.

Coastal temperate rainforests are extremely rare on a global scale, covering only a fraction of a percent of the earth's surface on the coasts of Chile, Norway, Scotland, Tasmania, New Zealand, US Pacific Northwest, Alaska, and British Columbia.

Today, close to sixty percent of the world's original coastal temperate rainforests have been destroyed as a result of logging and development. A full one-quarter of what remains is in British Columbia. In fact, the Great Bear Rainforest is the largest piece of contiguous temperate rainforest left in the world. Trees well over a thousand years old and close to a hundred meters high are commonplace, and the forests are home to wild salmon, eagles, grizzly bears, wolves, and the beautiful "Spirit Bear," a rare white subspecies of the Black Bear.

The Great Bear Rain Forest offers you the visitor a chance to experience over 10,000 years of evolution. While this area is not fully protected from the threat of logging great effort is being made by local residents, First Nations People and Environmental Groups to ensure that this British Columbia Wilderness remains as it always has been.

Discovery Expeditions is very concerned with the importance of this Wilderness Area and our tours are designed with the help of local First Nations People to bring an awareness and an appreciation of this unique British Columbia Wilderness. Our kayak tours are designed to be Eco friendly.
